On Wednesday evening, during Sony's February 2026 State of Play showcase, Lionsgate and Saber Interactive pulled back the curtain on what fans have been requesting for over a decade: a proper AAA John Wick video game. The announcement paired global content leader Lionsgate with best-selling video game publisher Saber Interactive for a new title based on the billion-dollar John Wick franchise.

Tailored for mature audiences and currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the new single-player third-person action game will combine John Wick's signature "gun-fu" fighting style with Saber's proven track record for delivering intense gaming experiences. Franchise director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves are both involved in the game's production, with Reeves returning to provide the character's look, voice, and likeness.

The reveal trailer, though brief, showed snippets of gameplay and confirmed what many suspected: this isn't another mobile tie-in or strategy spinoff. It's the real thing.

A Prequel Story in the Wick Universe

The game will feature an original story set in the John Wick timeline years before the Impossible Task. For those unfamiliar with the films' lore, the Impossible Task refers to the job that allowed John to leave the assassin life behind and marry his wife Helen. Everything that happens in the four films stems from her death.

The narrative is being crafted in collaboration with the films' writers, Chad Stahelski, and Lionsgate. It will address a significant time in John Wick's life, featuring well-known characters from the movies alongside compelling new characters created specifically for this production.

The game doesn't have an official title yet. Saber has asked fans to stay tuned for more details about the story, setting, and release date.

"I can't wait for fans to step into the shoes of John Wick and explore the multi-dimensional world of The High Table. We are collaborating closely with Saber's dedicated team to develop a game that captures the unparalleled action, brand-defining fight choreography, immersive world-building, and authenticity of the films." — Jenefer Brown, President of Global Products & Experiences at Lionsgate

    What We Know About Gameplay

Saber is creating new, high-stakes, fully interactive mechanics designed to make players feel like they are in a John Wick movie. The combat will feel like an authentic John Wick action scene taken straight from the films. Everything is designed to faithfully mimic the movie experience in a meaningful, fully playable way.

To achieve that goal, they are developing a distinct combat system from the ground up to ensure they stay credible to the iconic style of John Wick. The films are known for their long-take action sequences, fluid transitions between gunplay and hand-to-hand combat, and creative use of environmental weapons. Translating that to a controller is no small task.

Dynamic camerawork is a clear focus. During firefights, the camera shifts slightly to emphasize impact, echoing the film's kinetic style. There are also glimpses of high-speed driving segments, with Wick behind the wheel during intense pursuits through rain-soaked city streets.

The trailer showed environments that will feel familiar to fans. Dark corridors, luxury clubs, and stark hotel interiors reflect the world-building fans know from the franchise. The neo-noir aesthetic is unmistakable.

    Why Saber Interactive?

The choice of developer isn't random. Saber Interactive is the studio behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which turned into one of the biggest success stories in recent memory.

Space Marine 2 publisher Focus Entertainment revealed that 4.5 million units of the game had been sold within its first month after launching in September 2024. The game has since passed 7 million copies sold, an achievement that comes nine months after its release. For a licensed action game in a niche sci-fi universe, those numbers are exceptional.

Space Marine 2 has done so well that Saber CEO Tim Willits called it the fastest-selling game he's ever worked on. Willits previously worked at id Software on Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake, so that's not a comparison he makes lightly. That track record gives Lionsgate reason to be confident.

Saber CEO Matthew Karch stated: "John Wick is one of the most iconic characters in action film history. Saber is honored to be working alongside Chad, Keanu and the Lionsgate team in a true collaboration to bring the world of Wick to life in a AAA game."

    The Franchise Behind the Game

John Wick was a surprise hit in 2014 that catapulted Keanu Reeves into the next phase of his career and made directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch in-demand filmmakers in Hollywood. What started as a modest $20 million production became a cultural phenomenon.

John Wick is officially a billion-dollar franchise. Ticket sales for Lionsgate's Keanu Reeves-led action series have surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, with its tally standing at $1.011 billion across four films.

Each film has outperformed the last, a rare feat in Hollywood. In addition to four hit films, the John Wick universe includes the television series The Continental, one of Peacock's biggest original launches of 2023, and the spinoff film Ballerina starring Ana de Armas.

    What About John Wick Hex?

This isn't the first John Wick game. Bithell Games released John Wick Hex in 2019, a strategy adaptation that took a radically different approach to the material. Hex was described as a fast-paced, action-oriented strategy game that makes you think and strike like John Wick. It was created in close cooperation with the creative teams behind the films.

Hex was a clever experiment in translating cinematic action into tactical decision-making. What could easily have been a generic real-time action game worked wonderfully in that form, converting the pace of the movie action into an elegant illusion of it. Critics respected the ambition even if sales were modest.

But the new Saber game is something different entirely. This is a full third-person action experience built from the ground up with AAA resources.

Release Window and What to Expect

There's no telling when the John Wick game may arrive. The first look came on February 12, 2026, but there was no mention of a release date or even a rough release window.

Lionsgate first mentioned plans for both John Wick and Saw to get AAA games during an earnings call earlier in 2026. The game still appears to be early in the development pipeline. It's safe not to expect an imminent launch. Rather, the John Wick game is likely targeting 2027 or 2028, if one were to guess.

Based on its AAA scope, the game will likely launch at a standard $69.99 console price, though no official pricing has been confirmed. The PlayStation Store listing is already live, and players can wishlist it now. For fans who have spent years wondering what it would feel like to play through one of those meticulously choreographed hotel lobby shootouts, that wishlist button might be worth clicking.
